Ludwig Museum - Museum of Contemporary Art

Museum

Ludwig Museum - Museum of Contemporary Art is Hungary’s first museum that collects and displays works of modern and contemporary art. On its three floors, with an exhibition space of 3300 m2, there are 8-9 exhibitions organised every year. The German couple, Irene and Peter Ludwig, who held degrees in art history, were the founders of the Ludwig Museum. Irene’s family had lucrative chocolate manufactures, making it possible for them to acquire a collection of more than 12 thousand pieces, ranging from antiquities to contemporary art. The museum was founded in 1989, when they donated 70 artworks and lent 95. The present collection contains valuable pieces of American pop art (Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg etc.), and also focuses on Eastern and Central European art.
