Psychiatric Art Collection of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA
The Psychiatric Art Collection of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA) is the legal successor of the National Institute of Psychiatry and Neurology’s (OPNI) former museum. Since 2008, it has been operating as a public museum collection owned by MTA. It is an institution serving both public educational and scientific organizational purposes by holding exhibitions and conferences as well as hosting visitors, operating research services and providing space for high school and university classes. The collection is quite diverse regarding the visual education level of artists.
The core of the collection (paintings, graphics, ceramics, paper and textile objects) is not only valuable from the side of therapy history and aesthetics, but it can rather be viewed as the material heritage of the former psychiatric ward. The Collection also keeps records of the medical history research and archival work of the Institute's doctors. The Collection, a unique example of Hungarian cultural heritage, can be visited by appointment.
